John Allen Muhammad: The D.C. Sniper
Introduction
John Allen Muhammad, along with his teenage accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo, terrorized the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area in October 2002. The duo carried out a series of sniper-style shootings, killing ten people and injuring three others. Their crimes sent shockwaves across the nation and resulted in one of the largest manhunts in U.S. history.
The Crimes
Between October 2 and October 24, 2002, Muhammad and Malvo used a modified Chevrolet Caprice as a mobile sniper platform to shoot victims from a distance. Their attacks appeared random, targeting individuals in parking lots, gas stations, and streets across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

- October 2, 2002: James Martin, 55, shot and killed in a parking lot in Wheaton, Maryland.
- October 3, 2002: James Buchanan, 39, landscaper, shot and killed while mowing grass in Rockville, Maryland.
- October 3, 2002: Premkumar Walekar, 54, taxi driver, shot and killed while pumping gas in Montgomery County, Maryland.
- October 3, 2002: Sarah Ramos, 34, shot and killed while sitting on a bench outside a post office in Silver Spring, Maryland.
- October 3, 2002: Lori Ann Lewis-Rivera, 25, shot and killed while vacuuming her minivan in Kensington, Maryland.
- October 4, 2002: Pascal Charlot, 72, shot and killed while walking in Washington, D.C.
- October 7, 2002: Iran Brown, 13, shot and critically injured outside his middle school in Bowie, Maryland. He survived.
- October 9, 2002: Dean Harold Meyers, 53, shot and killed while pumping gas in Manassas, Virginia.
- October 11, 2002: Kenneth Bridges, 53, shot and killed while refueling at an Exxon station near Fredericksburg, Virginia.
- October 14, 2002: Linda Franklin, 47, shot and killed in a Home Depot parking lot in Falls Church, Virginia.
- October 19, 2002: Jeffrey Hopper, 37, shot and critically injured in a Ponderosa restaurant parking lot in Ashland, Virginia.
- October 22, 2002: Conrad Johnson, 35, bus driver, shot and killed while standing inside his bus in Aspen Hill, Maryland.
