On a Saturday evening in Montgomery, Alabama, the life of 52-year-old Claudine Lee Parker was tragically cut short in a seemingly random act of violence that would later be connected to a terrifying string of attacks that gripped the nation. On September 21, 2002, Parker was working as a clerk at the ABC Select Spirits store on Zelda Road. As she and her co-worker, Kellie Adams, were closing the store at approximately 7:15 p.m., they were both shot.
Parker suffered a fatal wound to her back, with the bullet damaging her spinal cord, leading to her death. Adams was also seriously injured in the attack but ultimately survived.
Initially, local law enforcement investigated the shooting as a botched robbery. However, the true and more sinister nature of the crime would not become apparent until weeks later. As a wave of sniper-style shootings terrorized the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, a crucial tip emerged. A caller to the D.C. sniper task force suggested that investigators look into the Montgomery liquor store shooting. This lead proved to be a breakthrough in the nationwide manhunt.
The investigation revealed that the shooting of Claudine Lee Parker and Kellie Adams was not an isolated incident but rather one of the 'preliminary' attacks carried out by John Allen Muhammad, who was 41 at the time, and his 17-year-old accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo. The duo had been traveling the country, carrying out shootings in various states before their infamous rampage in the D.C. area. Evidence from the Montgomery crime scene was eventually linked to the D.C. sniper attacks, solidifying the connection and helping authorities identify Muhammad and Malvo as the suspects.
The two were eventually apprehended, and their crime spree came to an end. In the subsequent legal proceedings, Lee Boyd Malvo confessed to his and Muhammad's involvement in a multitude of shootings, including the murder of Claudine Lee Parker. John Allen Muhammad was sentenced to death for his role in the killings and was executed in 2009. Lee Boyd Malvo, who was a minor at the time of the crimes, received multiple life sentences.
