On a Monday evening, September 23, 2002, a 45-year-old woman of Asian descent, Hong Im Ballenger, was leaving her job as the manager of the Beauty Depot on Florida Boulevard in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As she walked to her car around 6:30 p.m. with her keys in one hand and her lunch box in the other, she was confronted by a man. A single gunshot to her head ended her life almost instantly.
