Brenda Mullens, a 40-year-old woman, was fatally shot in her Baton Rouge home on Joyce Drive on the night of September 16, 2020. The incident unfolded around 10:28 p.m. following what authorities described as a verbal argument. Mullens was transported to a local hospital where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Her three children were present at the residence when the shooting occurred.
Investigators with the Baton Rouge Police Department quickly identified her 24-year-old
ex-boyfriend, Davyon Bentley, as the suspected shooter. Bentley, also known by the rap moniker Juice Bentley, allegedly fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. At the time of the shooting, Bentley was already wanted on several outstanding warrants, including for home invasion, illegal use of a weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and simple criminal damage to property.
Following a manhunt that lasted for nearly a month, Bentley was apprehended by federal marshals in Denver, Colorado, over a thousand miles away from Baton Rouge. He was subsequently extradited back to Louisiana to face charges related to Mullens' death. The charges against him included first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
