In the spring of 2022, a beloved waitress's life was tragically cut short in what was initially described as a terrible accident. Cathy Watson, a 41-year-old woman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, died on May 28, 2022, from a gunshot wound. Her fiancé, 31-year-old Gerald Smith, initially told authorities that Watson had accidentally shot herself in the head.
She was rushed to a local hospital but did not survive her injuries.
However, the East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office ruled her death a homicide, prompting a deeper investigation by Baton Rouge Police detectives. The investigation revealed a history of domestic disputes between the couple. On the night of her death, Watson and Smith had been involved in a verbal argument at a laundromat on Greenwell Street that turned physical. Friends of Watson later revealed that she had met Smith, a cook, at the restaurant where she worked. They said that after he moved in with her and her daughter and grandson, his true colors began to show, and she had grown fearful of him.
With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Gerald Smith was arrested on June 1, 2022. He was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities, and domestic abuse battery. Friends and family mourned the loss of the hardworking and kind mother and grandmother, who they said longed to be loved and always had a smile on her face despite living in fear.
