In the late afternoon of December 1, 2022, the life of 28-year-old Da'Ja Davis, a female resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. Concerns for her well-being arose when she failed to pick up her son from daycare, an act her mother described as entirely out of character. The family's worst fears were realized when police discovered Davis deceased inside a vehicle on Shelley Street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The initial investigation pointed towards a domestic incident as the cause of the violent act.
Immediately following the discovery of Davis's body, a frantic search began for her missing six-month-old daughter. The focus of the investigation quickly turned to Davis's 29-year-old boyfriend, Napoleon Crane. Authorities believed Crane had shot and killed Davis before abducting their infant child and fleeing the state. This prompted the issuance of an Amber Alert that was disseminated to law enforcement agencies nationwide. The frantic search for the missing infant and her alleged abductor created a tense situation that spanned multiple states.
The manhunt for Napoleon Crane came to a dramatic and violent end the following morning in a rural part of West Virginia. State troopers in West Virginia attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Crane's vehicle on Interstate 77. As they approached, Crane opened fire on the officers. Initial reports suggested that the troopers returned fire and killed him. However, later information released by the Baton Rouge Police Department indicated that Crane appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Miraculously, the six-month-old baby was found unharmed in the vehicle and was safely recovered. The death of Crane, the sole suspect in Davis's murder, brought an end to the immediate search but left Davis's family with unanswered questions about the motive behind the tragic event.
