Coleen M. Thompson: The Negligent Nurse of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital

Background

Coleen M. Thompson, born in 1969, was a nurse who worked in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Maryland, from May 2002 through a nurse-staffing agency. During her 13-month tenure, 211 patients died under her care, raising significant concerns about her conduct and the quality of care provided.

Criminal Acts

Thompson was implicated in the intentional neglect of critically ill patients, leading to their premature deaths. Her actions included:
  • Failing to notify doctors of significant changes in patients' conditions.
  • Withholding necessary medications and treatments.
  • Administering unauthorized medications.
  • Encouraging colleagues to allow patients to die without intervention.

Victims

The following patients died under Thompson's care due to her neglect:
  • Adela Urbina, 63: Hospitalized with pneumonia, experienced a sharp drop in blood pressure. Thompson failed to notify a doctor, leading to Urbina's death on July 6, 2003.
  • Harry L. Hancock, 69: Suffered a heart attack and pancreatitis. Thompson allegedly turned off his IV pump before a doctor pronounced him dead on July 5, 2003.
  • Geraldine Baxter, 68: Hospitalized for complications from a hip replacement. Thompson administered morphine not ordered by a doctor and declared Baxter dead 13 minutes before her last heartbeats were recorded.
  • Lillian Vanzandt, 83: Thompson failed to administer medication needed to stimulate her heart, leading to Vanzandt's death on March 30, 2003.
  • Raymond H. McGivern, 86: Thompson left his intravenous pump in the "standby" position and became upset when a colleague refused to let the patient die, leading to McGivern's death.
