David Villarreal, born on October 12, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas, is an American serial killer who targeted at least five gay men between 1978 and 1981. His crimes, characterized by extreme violence and torture, spanned across San Antonio and Dallas, Texas. Villarreal was apprehended on March 10, 1981, and subsequently received multiple life sentences for his actions. He is currently incarcerated at the James V. Allred Unit in Wichita Falls, Texas.

  • Robert Johnson Manley II
    • Age: 71
    • Date of Murder: Late 1978 or early 1979
    • Location: San Antonio, Texas
    • Details: Manley was bludgeoned to death in his apartment with a claw hammer. Described as an "eccentric" individual without a job, he was found dead in his bedroom by neighbors, clad only in his trousers. The bloodied murder weapon was left next to the body, but no suspect was identified at the time.
  • Ernesto Carbajal Garcia
    • Age: 26
    • Date of Murder: March 17, 1979
    • Location: Dallas, Texas
    • Details: Garcia's body was found in an abandoned building in downtown Dallas, his skull having been crushed in with a concrete block. In addition to this, an autopsy established that he had likely been tortured before his eventual death, as Villarreal had struck him with a piece of wood on the head and stabbed him with an ice pick.
  • Tony Natal Gutierrez
    • Age: 32
    • Date of Murder: April 18, 1979
    • Location: Dallas, Texas
    • Details: Villarreal attacked Gutierrez in the main room of his apartment by stabbing him in the chest with a knife before slashing his throat. He then proceeded to disfigure Gutierrez's face, shoving a teaspoon up his nose and stabbing him near both eyes before covering his head with a pillow.
  • Charles Edward Moya
    • Age: 30
    • Date of Murder: April 18, 1979
    • Location: Dallas, Texas
    • Details: After killing Gutierrez, Villarreal moved to the hallway, where he caught Moya and slashed his throat as well. He then burned Moya's right eyelid with a small wooden match.
  • Joe Edward Duque
    • Age: 18
    • Date of Murder: March 3, 1981
    • Location: San Antonio, Texas
    • Details: Villarreal met Duque at a city park, where he proceeded to bludgeon him to death with a cedar post. He then quickly left the area, leaving behind the murder weapon at the crime scene.

Arrest and Confessions

Already considered a strong suspect due to his acquaintance with all the known victims, authorities in Dallas moved to arrest Villarreal once they received information about his presence in their area. He was arrested without incident on March 10, 1981, and lodged in the county jail.
