Early Life and Background

Daniel Thomas Tavares Jr., born in 1966, was the youngest of four children to Ann and Daniel Tavares Sr., a U.S. Navy officer. Following his parents' divorce when he was four, Tavares and his siblings were raised by their mother. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade and had his first arrest at 19 for assault during a burglary. This incident marked the beginning of a series of legal troubles throughout the 1980s.

  • Details: Tavares stabbed his mother, Ann, 26 times in their home. Upon police arrival, he exhibited erratic behavior, claiming to hear voices. He later provided various explanations for his actions, including alleged drug influence and past abuse. In June 1992, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 17 to 20 years in prison.

  • Details: Botelho disappeared in 1988. In 2000, Tavares, while incarcerated, led authorities to her remains buried in the backyard of his former residence. He initially implicated others but later confessed to her murder, citing a cocaine debt as the motive. In 2015, he was convicted of her murder.

  • Date: November 17, 2007
  • Location: Graham, Washington
  • Details: Shortly after his release from prison, Tavares fatally shot his neighbors, Beverly (28) and Brian (30) Mauck, in their home. He claimed the motive was a dispute over $50 for a tattoo and perceived disrespect. In February 2008, he pleaded guilty to aggravated first-degree murder and received a life sentence without parole.
