Early Life and Background
John Annibel, born in 1958 in Humboldt County, California, was one half of a set of twins. While his brother James led a trouble-free life, John exhibited a hair-trigger temper and paranoia from an early age. Raised in a logging family, the Annibels moved from Scotia to Fruitland Ridge above Myers Flat during John's youth. Despite his family's attempts to provide a stable environment, John's behavioral issues set him on a dark path.
The Murder of Sherry Lynn Smith (1976)
On May 1, 1976, the body of 15-year-old Sherry Lynn Smith was discovered off Eel Rock Road, just north of Miranda, California. She had attended a dance at the Garberville Fireman’s Hall the previous evening and was last seen around 2 a.m. as the event concluded. Witnesses reported seeing Sherry with 14-year-old Christina Anderson that night. Tragically, Sherry's partially clothed body was found two days later, showing signs of a violent assault. Despite being a prime suspect due to his proximity and acquaintance with Sherry, John Annibel was not charged at the time.
