Henry Louis Wallace: The Charlotte Serial Killer

Overview

Henry Louis Wallace was an American serial killer who murdered eleven women in South Carolina and North Carolina between March 1990 and March 1994. Ten of the killings occurred in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Wallace worked at several fast-food restaurants and became a manager at Taco Bell. This employment history led newspapers to give him such names as the "Taco Bell Strangler" and the "Charlotte Strangler." Wallace primarily targeted young Black women, most of whom knew him personally or had connections to his friends, romantic partners or workplaces. He frequently entered their homes without creating suspicion because they regarded him as a friend, coworker, supervisor or trusted acquaintance. Once inside, Wallace sexually assaulted many of the women before strangling them. He also committed robberies, stole vehicles and personal property, attempted to destroy evidence and, in several cases, returned to crime scenes after the murders.

Early Life and Criminal Background

Henry Louis Wallace was born on November 4, 1965, in Barnwell, South Carolina. He attended Barnwell High School, where he participated in student government and was the only male member of the cheerleading squad. After graduating in 1983, he worked briefly as a radio disc jockey before joining the United States Navy in 1985. While stationed in the Seattle area, Wallace became involved in burglary, theft and drug use. He was arrested for breaking into a hardware store and was convicted of second-degree burglary in 1988. He received supervised probation but reportedly failed to attend many required meetings. He eventually returned to South Carolina and later moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, in November 1991.
