Caroline Love, a 20-year-old Black female from Charlotte, North Carolina, was reported missing on June 15, 1992. She had been living in an apartment with her roommate, Sadie McKnight, who was also the girlfriend of Henry Louis Wallace. Caroline had recently completed her shift at a Bojangles' restaurant and was last seen entering her apartment that evening. Her absence from work raised concern, prompting her family and friends to file a missing person report.
Inside her apartment, investigators noted that furniture had been moved and the sheets from her bed were missing, but there were no immediate signs of foul play.
Henry Louis Wallace, a 28-year-old Black male, was later identified as the prime suspect in Caroline Love's disappearance and murder. Wallace had made a copy of McKnight's apartment key and entered the residence when no one was home. He waited in the bathroom until Caroline returned, then approached her under the pretense of leaving soon. After initiating unwanted physical contact, Wallace placed Caroline in a chokehold and dragged her to the bedroom. There, he tied her hands with a curling iron cord, placed tape over her mouth, and sexually assaulted her while she was semi-conscious. He continued to strangle her until she died.
