On March 8, 1994, Brandi June Henderson, an 18-year-old African American female from Charlotte, North Carolina, was brutally murdered in her apartment. At the time of her death, Brandi was still attending high school and had recently become a mother to a baby boy named Tyrece. She was described by family and friends as a warm, loving, and vibrant young woman with a promising future. Her boyfriend, Berness Woods, was away at work during the attack.
Brandi had previously worked at a Golden Corral restaurant alongside Henry Louis Wallace, the man later identified as her killer.
Henry Louis Wallace, an African American male and known serial killer, entered Brandi’s apartment on the evening of March 8, 1994. He raped the 18-year-old African American female while she held her infant son, then strangled her to death. Wallace also attempted to strangle the baby using an item of clothing, but the child miraculously survived. This horrific act was part of a larger pattern of violence committed by Wallace, who targeted young African American women in Charlotte, many of whom he personally knew through work or social connections.
Wallace’s murder spree spanned four years, beginning in 1990 and ending shortly after Brandi’s death. He was arrested on March 13, 1994, just days after killing Brandi June Henderson. During a lengthy police interrogation, Wallace confessed to the murders of 11 women, nine of whom were African American females from Charlotte. His confessions included detailed accounts of how he raped, robbed, and murdered each victim. Wallace was later convicted of nine murders and sentenced to death. He remains on death row at Central Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Brandi’s death, along with the deaths of other African American female victims, sparked criticism of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Many in the community believed that the authorities failed to act swiftly due to the victims’ race and socioeconomic status. The case prompted broader conversations about racial bias in law enforcement and the value placed on the lives of marginalized individuals. Brandi June Henderson’s tragic death remains a painful reminder of the lives lost during Wallace’s reign of terror and the systemic failures that allowed it to continue for so long.
