On the night of January 25, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a shooting occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Lake Mist Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident resulted in three individuals being shot: 21-year-old Yara Velasquez-Escobar, a 19-year-old man, and a 15-year-old girl. All three victims were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Tragically, on January 27, 2024, Yara succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The other two victims survived the shooting.
Following an investigation, 20-year-old German Pacheco was identified as the suspect in the shooting. He was arrested on January 31, 2024, and charged with the murder of Yara Velasquez-Escobar, as well as two counts of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
Yara Velasquez-Escobar was deeply cherished by her family and friends, who mourn her untimely passing. A service in her memory was held at Iglesia Camino in Monroe, North Carolina, where loved ones gathered to bid their final farewell.
The community continues to grieve the loss of Yara and hopes for justice to be served as the legal proceedings against Pacheco move forward.
