Arthur Gary Bishop: A Detailed Account of His Crimes
Early Life
Arthur Gary Bishop was born on September 29, 1952, in Hinckley, Utah. Raised in a devout Latter-day Saint (LDS) family, he was the eldest of six brothers. Bishop excelled academically as an honor student and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. At 19, he served as a missionary in the Philippines. However, his life took a dark turn when he was arrested for embezzlement in February 1978. After receiving a five-year suspended sentence, he fled to Salt Lake City, adopting the alias "Roger Downs." In 1979, he was excommunicated from the LDS Church.
Involvement in Youth Programs
While in Salt Lake City, Bishop joined the Big Brothers program, acting as a mentor to a 10-year-old boy for nearly a year. His tenure ended when program directors discovered he was molesting other children, leading to his removal before his first known murder.
The Murders
Between 1979 and 1983, Bishop committed a series of heinous crimes, abducting and murdering five young boys in Utah. His method often involved luring the children with promises of candy or money, followed by sexual assault and murder. The victims were buried in remote areas, with their bodies discovered only after Bishop's confession.
