On a seemingly pleasant Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2001, 20-year-old Braden Lindholdt and his close friend, Jim Robinson, also 20, decided to go on a kayaking trip in Bellingham, Washington. The two friends, who were not experienced kayakers, borrowed a pair of kayaks and set out from Wildcat Cove at Larrabee State Park for what they intended to be a short outing near the shore. It was a beautiful and sunny day, and neither of the young men wore life jackets, likely not anticipating the sudden and dramatic shift the weather was about to take. Braden was last seen wearing blue nylon pants, a windbreaker, a baseball cap, and white size 12 Reebok shoes. He also had a piercing in his left ear. As the afternoon progressed, the weather took a dangerous turn. Around 5 p.m., the wind intensified, and rain began to fall, creating treacherous conditions on the water for the two inexperienced kayakers. The calm and sunny day had quickly transformed into a hazardous situation. The borrowed kayaks were later discovered near the mouth of the Nooksack River, but there was no sign of Braden or Jim. The absence of life jackets and spray skirts for their kayaks would have made navigating the unexpectedly rough waters extremely difficult. An extensive search was launched for the two missing friends, but tragically, they were never found. It is presumed that both Braden Lindholdt and Jim Robinson drowned in the turbulent waters of Bellingham Bay. In the years following their disappearance, the families of the two young men have found a touching way to keep their memories alive. Each year, on the eve of the anniversary of their disappearance, the mothers of Braden and Jim gather to paint a large boulder, known locally as "graffiti rock," that overlooks Interstate 5. This annual act has become a poignant tribute and a way for the community to remember the two friends who were lost to the sea on that fateful day. The case serves as a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the water and the critical importance of safety precautions, such as wearing life jackets, even for what is planned as a brief excursion.
