On the evening of July 11, 2021, 14-year-old White female Madison Elizabeth Parrott was at a house in Newton, Kansas, with a small group of friends. Their gathering was tragically interrupted when a 16-year-old male arrived at the residence. Witnesses reported that the male suspect was visibly intoxicated and was brandishing a handgun. He was waving the gun around and pointing it at people in the room before he fatally shot Madison.
After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene.
Neighbors and witnesses attempted to render aid to Madison and called for emergency services, but she succumbed to her injuries. The following morning, Newton police apprehended the 16-year-old suspect at his home. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and criminal threat. An investigation into how the suspect obtained the firearm was initiated. A judge was to determine later whether the teen would be prosecuted as a juvenile or an adult.
Madison, known as "Maddie" to her friends and family, was remembered as a loving, compassionate, and outgoing young woman with a talent for art. She was an incoming freshman at Hesston High School. In the wake of her death, the Hesston community mourned her loss, with over 100 people attending a candlelight vigil in her honor at King Park. Her family expressed their devastation, highlighting the joy she brought to those who knew her.
