Overview
J. C. X. Simon was a member of a group known as the "Death Angels," responsible for a series of racially motivated attacks in San Francisco between October 1973 and April 1974. These crimes, termed the "Zebra murders," resulted in the deaths of at least 15 white individuals and injuries to eight others. The name "Zebra" originated from the special police radio band (the "Z" channel) assigned to the investigation.Notable Crimes
- Quita Hague: On October 20, 1973, Quita Hague, 28, was abducted along with her husband, Richard Hague, while walking near their home. They were forced into a van, and Quita was later nearly decapitated with a machete. Richard survived despite severe injuries.
- Frances Rose: On October 30, 1973, Frances Rose, 28, was shot multiple times in her car near the University of California Extension by Jessie Lee Cooks.
- Saleem Erakat: On November 25, 1973, Saleem Erakat, 53, was found dead in his store near the San Francisco Civic Center, shot in the head with his hands bound. Over $1,000 was stolen.
- Paul Dancik: On December 11, 1973, Paul Dancik, 26, was shot and killed while standing near a telephone booth.
- Marietta DiGirolamo: On December 13, 1973, Marietta DiGirolamo, 31, was shot three times at close range while standing in a doorway along Divisadero Street.
- Ilario Bertuccio: On December 20, 1973, Ilario Bertuccio, 81, was shot four times while walking home from work.
- Neal Moynihan: On December 22, 1973, Neal Moynihan, 19, was shot three times while walking near Market Street.
- Mildred Hosler: On December 22, 1973, Mildred Hosler, 65, was shot four times at point-blank range within minutes of Moynihan's shooting.
- Unidentified Victim: On December 24, 1973, a dismembered body, missing the head, hands, and feet, was found at Ocean Beach.
- Tana Smith: On January 28, 1974, Tana Smith, 32, was shot on the sidewalk, six blocks from her home.
- Vincent Wollin: On January 28, 1974, Vincent Wollin, 69, was shot twice in the back while searching through trash cans near his home.
- John Bambic: On January 28, 1974, John Bambic, 87, was shot twice in the back and died immediately.
- Jane Holly: On January 28, 1974, Jane Holly, 45, was shot twice in the back while doing her laundry.
- Thomas Rainwater: On April 1, 1974, Thomas Rainwater, 19, a Salvation Army cadet, was shot and killed while on his way to a restaurant.
- Nelson T. Shields IV: On April 16, 1974, Nelson Shields IV, 23, was shot three times in the back while loading a rug into a friend's car.
Investigation and Arrest
The series of murders led to widespread panic in San Francisco, prompting an intensive police investigation dubbed "Operation Zebra." The investigation faced challenges, including racial tensions and criticisms over police tactics.
