On the evening of April 1, 1974, in San Francisco, 19-year-old Thomas Rainwater, a white male Salvation Army cadet, and his companion, 21-year-old Linda Story, were en route to a nearby market. As they proceeded along Geary Street near Webster, an African American male approached them from behind. Without provocation, he turned, produced a .32 caliber firearm, and fired four shots before fleeing the scene.
