On September 17, 2008, Jordan McKay, age 23, was fatally shot while riding his bicycle home from work in the Richmond District of San Francisco. The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. as McKay was cycling along 15th Avenue and Cabrillo Street. He was intercepted by three to four individuals in a light-colored four-door vehicle, identified as a 2008 Chevrolet Impala or Malibu. The attackers, who intended to rob McKay, confronted him, leading to an altercation where McKay fought back.
During the struggle, one of the assailants shot McKay. The suspects then fled southbound on 15th Avenue in their vehicle, leaving McKay fatally wounded at the scene.
The vehicle used by the suspects was reported to be involved in a previous attempted robbery in the East Bay an hour earlier. The same car was later found abandoned and burned the next day on the unit block of Cashmere Street in San Francisco. Authorities have described one of the suspects as a young Black male, around 19-24 years old, standing approximately 6'1" to 6'2" tall. Despite these details and an ongoing investigation, the homicide remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made. The San Francisco Police Department has continued to ask for the public’s assistance in providing information that may lead to identifying the suspects.
Jordan McKay’s death was part of a series of violent crimes that plagued the Richmond District during that period, and his case remains one of the many cold cases that continue to haunt the city. The lack of a clear motive and witnesses has made solving the case particularly challenging, despite increased reward offers and repeated public appeals for information from both the police and McKay's family.
