In the late hours of a Saturday in Jersey City, a young man's life was cut short by gunfire. Ahmad McPherson, a 22-year-old male, was shot and killed on the night of June 5, 2021. The incident occurred at the intersection of Stegman Street and Martin Luther King Drive, where police responded to a report of shots fired at approximately 10:05 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered McPherson with gunshot wounds to his torso.
Emergency medical services rushed McPherson to the Jersey
City Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal. He was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner's Office later determined the cause of death to be homicide resulting from the gunshot wounds. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, in conjunction with the Jersey City Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the shooting.
Within days of the fatal shooting, authorities identified a suspect in the case. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced they were searching for Tybear Miles, then 25, of Jersey City, and charged him with murder and weapons offenses. For over two and a half years, Miles remained at large. The pursuit of justice for McPherson's death extended beyond New Jersey, culminating in an arrest in early 2024.
On January 11, 2024, Tybear Miles, then 28, was apprehended in Spartanburg, South Carolina. His arrest was a coordinated effort between the Spartanburg Police Department and the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. Miles was charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Following his capture, he was detained at the Spartanburg County Detention Center, awaiting extradition back to New Jersey to face the charges related to the death of Ahmad McPherson.
