Robert Spangler: The Serial Killer Who Eluded Justice for Decades
Introduction
Robert Spangler was a cold-blooded killer who took the lives of his own family members and later, an unsuspecting woman he lured into his web of deception. His crimes spanned decades, and it wasn’t until 2000 that he finally confessed to his heinous acts. Spangler manipulated crime scenes to make his murders appear as suicides or accidents, allowing him to remain free for years.
The Murder of His First Family - December 30, 1978
Robert Spangler’s killing spree began with his own family. On December 30, 1978, in their Littleton, Colorado home, he executed a brutal plan to eliminate his wife and children.
- Nancy Spangler (45) – His first wife, was shot in the head.
- David Spangler (17) – His son, was shot and killed.
- Susan Spangler (15) – His daughter, also shot to death.
Spangler staged the scene to look like a murder-suicide, placing the gun in Nancy’s hand to frame her for the deaths. He then called the police, feigning distress and claiming to have discovered the bodies.
The Murder of His Third Wife - April 11, 1993
After divorcing his second wife, Spangler remarried a woman named Donna Sundling. Their marriage seemed normal, but on April 11, 1993, while hiking in the Grand Canyon, he pushed her off a 200-foot cliff.
- Donna Sundling (58) – His third wife, was pushed to her death.
Spangler later told authorities that Donna had lost her balance and fallen. Due to the remote location and lack of witnesses, his story was initially believed.
