Charles Kennedy: The Serial Killer of the Taos Trail

Background

Charles Kennedy was a mountain man who settled near Eagle Nest, New Mexico, around 1865. He lived with his wife, Rosa, a Ute Indian, and their three-year-old son. The family established a small guesthouse in an isolated area at the base of Palo Flechado Pass, on the road between Taos and Elizabethtown. This location was frequented by travelers, making it an ideal spot for their rest stop. However, Kennedy had a sinister motive behind his hospitality.

Modus Operandi

Kennedy would lure travelers into his home under the guise of offering food and shelter. Once they were settled, he would murder them, often while they slept, to rob them of their possessions. The bodies were then disposed of by either burning them in the fireplace or burying them around the property.

Discovery of the Crimes
