Danny Paul Bible: The Ice Pick Killer
Danny Paul Bible was an American serial killer, serial rapist and repeat violent offender whose criminal history stretched across several states and nearly two decades. Born on August 28, 1951, in Angleton, Texas, Bible became associated with four killings in Texas as well as kidnappings and numerous sexual assaults. His murder victims included three women and a four-month-old infant. The crime for which he eventually received a death sentence was the 1979 rape and murder of 20-year-old Inez Deaton in Houston.
Bible's known murders occurred during two separate periods, first in the Houston area in 1979 and again in North Texas in 1983. He was convicted of two of the killings during separate prosecutions and later confessed to responsibility for the other two. His record also included aggravated kidnapping and sexual offenses in Montana, repeated sexual abuse after his release from prison, and the 1998 sexual assault of a woman in Louisiana that ultimately led investigators back to the decades-old Deaton murder.
The Murder of Inez Deaton
In May 1979, 20-year-old Inez Deaton, a young mother who knew members of Bible's family, went to Bible's Houston-area residence to use a telephone. A neighbor later reported seeing her enter the home. She was never seen alive again.
Bible later confessed that he was watching television when Deaton arrived. According to his statements to investigators, he grabbed her after she entered the residence and sexually assaulted her as she resisted him. Bible remembered strangling her and using a sharp weapon against her, although portions of his later account were clouded by claims that he could not remember every detail of the killing.
Deaton suffered an exceptionally violent attack. Her body contained eleven ice-pick stab wounds, including wounds to the chest and back, as well as injuries consistent with strangulation and sexual assault. Her throat had also been cut. After killing her, Bible placed her body in a vehicle, drove to a bayou in Houston and abandoned her there.
Deaton's body was discovered along the slope of the bayou on May 27, 1979. Evidence at the scene indicated that her body had been moved and deliberately positioned after her death. Because Deaton had last been seen entering Bible's residence several days before the discovery, the precise day on which she was killed was not firmly established in later court summaries. May 27 became the official offense date commonly associated with the case because that was the day her body was found.
Bible was not arrested for Deaton's murder at the time. He disappeared from the Houston area around the period of her funeral and subsequently spent time in Wyoming and Montana. The killing remained unresolved for almost twenty years.
Violence in Montana and the Return to Texas
After leaving Texas, Bible continued displaying violent behavior. Court records described an abusive relationship in which he assaulted a woman and engaged in increasingly dangerous acts. His criminal activity also included theft and aggravated kidnapping.
By 1983, Bible had returned to Texas and was living in the area west of Fort Worth. On May 16, 1983, three people connected to him disappeared from the Weatherford area: Pamela Kay Hudgins, Tracy Zan Harrison Powers and Powers' four-month-old son, Justin Powers. All three were eventually determined to have been killed.
The 1983 Weatherford-Area Killings
Pamela Kay Hudgins, 21, shared a residence with Tracy Powers. Hudgins, Powers and the infant Justin disappeared on May 16, 1983. Bible subsequently left the area, and authorities quickly began examining his possible connection to the disappearances.
The first major discovery came on June 21, 1983, when skeletal remains were found near U.S. 180 between Mineral Wells and Weatherford. They were identified as those of Tracy Powers, who was reported as 20 years old in contemporary coverage, and her four-month-old son Justin. Decomposition was too advanced for investigators to establish a definitive cause of death for either victim.
Pamela Hudgins remained missing for several more months. On November 6, 1983, children playing in a wooded area near Wolters Village in Mineral Wells discovered human remains. Dental records identified the victim as Hudgins. Examination of her skull showed severe blunt-force injuries to both the front and back of her head. Investigators believed the weapon may have been a hammer or similar blunt object. Although an exact time of death could not be medically established, police believed Hudgins had died very soon after she disappeared on May 16.
Bible was eventually accused of Hudgins' murder. In January 1984, he was arrested in Fort Myers, Florida, after authorities had been looking for him in connection with cases in Texas and Montana. He was returned to Texas, and on August 3, 1984, he pleaded guilty to murdering Pamela Hudgins. He received a 25-year prison sentence.
Authorities did not initially prosecute Bible for the deaths of Tracy and Justin Powers. The condition of their remains made it impossible to determine precisely how they died, leaving prosecutors without the same type of physical evidence available in the Hudgins case.
Bible's Later Confession to the Triple Killing
Years later, Bible gave investigators a detailed account linking himself to all three 1983 deaths. His statements were subsequently introduced during the punishment phase of his capital murder trial for the death of Inez Deaton.
According to the account summarized in federal court records, Bible admitted sexually assaulting Pamela Hudgins and striking her repeatedly with an object. He said he left her body on a hill. He then returned to the residence, where he became involved in an argument with Tracy Powers while she was holding her infant son.
Bible claimed that he grabbed or pushed Powers, causing her to fall down a staircase with Justin. He said both mother and child were motionless afterward. Bible also remembered obtaining an ice pick from the kitchen, although he claimed he could not remember what he did with it. He admitted placing Powers and her infant son's bodies in a container and abandoning them beside a road between Weatherford and Mineral Wells.
Because no medical cause of death could be established for Tracy or Justin, some details of Bible's confession could not be independently confirmed through forensic evidence. Nevertheless, his admissions, knowledge of the crimes and other evidence caused courts reviewing his later case to identify Powers and Justin among the four people Bible had killed.
Kidnapping and Sexual Assault
Bible's violence was not limited to murder. After the 1983 killings, he returned to Montana. He was convicted of aggravated kidnapping offenses there, and evidence introduced during his later Texas capital trial established that he raped an 11-year-old girl during one of his Montana crimes. He ultimately received a 20-year sentence for the Montana kidnapping offenses.
Bible served his sentences concurrently and was released from prison under mandatory supervision in the early 1990s. His release did not end his violent behavior. Court records later established that while free he repeatedly sexually abused several young nieces between approximately 1996 and 1998.
The Attack on Tera Robinson
On November 7, 1998, Bible entered the hotel room of Tera Robinson in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. He threatened and sexually assaulted Robinson before tying her up. According to later court findings, Bible attempted to force her into a duffel bag but was unsuccessful. Robinson convinced him that her boyfriend would soon return, and Bible eventually left.
The Louisiana attack became the event that brought Bible's long history of violence back under intensive scrutiny. Federal authorities located him in Fort Myers, Florida, and arrested him. By December 16, 1998, Bible was back in Louisiana giving investigators statements about the Robinson attack and other crimes from his past.
Confessing to the Unsolved Murders
While being questioned following his arrest, Bible unexpectedly began discussing the murder of Inez Deaton. Louisiana authorities contacted investigators in Texas, reopening a homicide that had remained unresolved since 1979.
On December 18, 1998, Bible gave additional recorded statements. He admitted that Deaton had entered his residence to use the telephone, that he had forced himself on her, strangled her and attacked her with a weapon before transporting her body to the bayou. Although Bible sometimes claimed that portions of his memory were unclear, investigators determined that his statements contained information connecting him to the crime.
Bible also confessed to his responsibility for the deaths of Tracy Powers and Justin Powers in addition to the Pamela Hudgins murder for which he had already served prison time. Investigators reviewing his history came to regard him as responsible for at least four killings and numerous sexual assaults.

The prosecution relied heavily on Bible's recorded confessions along with testimony establishing that Deaton had been last seen entering his residence.
Forensic evidence supported important portions of the prosecution's case. Deaton's injuries were consistent with a violent sexual assault, strangulation and repeated stabbing. Although DNA testing did not independently identify Bible, prosecutors argued that his confession and the circumstances surrounding Deaton's disappearance established his guilt.
In June 2003, a Harris County jury found Bible guilty of capital murder. During the punishment phase, prosecutors presented the broader history of violence that had followed Deaton's death, including the 1983 murders, kidnappings, sexual assaults and repeated abuse of children. The jury concluded that Bible represented a continuing danger, and he was sentenced to death.
Death Row and Appeals
Bible's capital conviction was affirmed by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 2005. Over the following years, his attorneys pursued state and federal appeals challenging different aspects of his conviction, confession, representation and death sentence. The courts repeatedly rejected his efforts to overturn the judgment.
By the time an execution date was set, Bible suffered from significant health problems and used a wheelchair. His attorneys argued that his medical condition would make lethal injection unusually difficult because prison personnel might have trouble establishing intravenous access. They proposed alternative methods of execution, including a firing squad or nitrogen gas, but the courts declined to stop the execution.
Execution
Danny Paul Bible was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit in Huntsville, Texas, on June 27, 2018. He was 66 years old. The execution came thirty-nine years after Inez Deaton was killed and nearly twenty years after Bible's Louisiana arrest finally gave investigators the confession that broke her cold case.
Bible left behind an unusually extensive record of violence encompassing murder, kidnapping and repeated sexual assault. Two of his four known killings resulted in murder convictions: Pamela Hudgins in 1984 and Inez Deaton in 2003. He was never separately tried for killing Tracy Powers or her infant son Justin, largely because their decomposed remains did not allow investigators to establish a medical cause of death, but Bible confessed to the killings and later courts treated them as part of his established history of homicidal violence.
The case of Danny Paul Bible also demonstrates how a decades-old murder can remain unresolved until an offender is arrested for an entirely different crime.
