Nicholas Todd Sutton: A Detailed Account of His Crimes
Early Life
Nicholas Todd Sutton was born on July 15, 1961, in Morristown, Tennessee. His mother abandoned him at birth, and his father, a mentally-ill and verbally abusive alcoholic, was frequently detained in mental institutions or jails. Sutton's father taught him to use drugs, leading to a lifelong addiction. After his father's sudden death, Sutton was adopted by his grandmother, Dorothy Virginia Sutton, a schoolteacher living in Lowland.
First Murders
In 1979, at the age of 18, Sutton embarked on a killing spree that shocked his community. His first known victim was his grandmother, Dorothy Virginia Sutton. On Christmas Day 1979, Sutton reported her missing, but evidence of foul play was found in their home. Sutton later confessed to hitting her in the back of the head with a blunt instrument, stuffing her body in a bag, weighing it down with a cinderblock, and throwing it into the Nolichucky River. Her body was found two days later.
Additional Victims
- John Large: Sutton's high school friend, killed in 1979.
