Isaac Heller: The 19th-Century American Serial Killer
Early Life
Isaac Heller was born on May 2, 1809, in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. Little is documented about his early life and upbringing, but he later became infamous for a series of brutal murders in the early 19th century.
First Known Murder (1830)
In 1830, Heller committed his first recorded murder:
- Catherine Muckeroy, aged 9, was decapitated in Pennsylvania. This heinous act shocked the local community, leading to Heller's arrest. However, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was subsequently institutionalized.
Release and Subsequent Murders (1836)
After spending several years in confinement, Heller was released, only to commit more atrocities on February 27, 1836, in Liberty, Indiana:
- Elizabeth McCollan Heller (his wife) was bludgeoned to death.
- John Wesley Heller (his son) was decapitated.
- Sarah Heller (his daughter) was bludgeoned to death.
- Mary Heller, his 3-month-old daughter, was also bludgeoned to death.
