Everick L. Coleman, aged 43, was fatally shot on August 7, 2016, while celebrating his birthday in Chicago’s University Village neighborhood. Coleman, a former security monitor at Oak Park and River Forest High School, was attending a gathering held in his honor. The celebration, which had about 200 attendees, turned tragic when shots were fired just after midnight. Coleman was struck in the head and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 40-year-old woman was also injured during the shooting. No arrests were immediately made in the case.
Coleman, known for his positive influence at the high school, was remembered fondly by friends and colleagues. His death highlighted the tragic reality of Chicago’s violence in 2016, a year that saw a sharp increase in shootings and homicides, affecting both communities and families across the city.
