On March 8, 1990, 18-year-old Black female Tashanda Shevon Bethea was murdered in Barnwell, South Carolina. A high school senior at Barnwell High School, Tashanda was described as bright-eyed and well-liked. She had met Henry Louis Wallace, a man who reportedly had a romantic interest in her, sometime around 1989 or 1990. Wallace, also from Barnwell, would later become known as a serial killer responsible for the deaths of multiple young Black women across South Carolina and North Carolina.
