Robert Andrew Berdella Jr. (January 31, 1949 – October 8, 1992) was an American serial killer who operated in Kansas City, Missouri, between 1984 and 1987. His crimes were uncovered in 1988, leading to his conviction and life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.Early Life
Berdella was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He enrolled at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1967 but withdrew in 1969 after facing criticism for his controversial art projects. Remaining in Kansas City, he purchased a house at 4315 Charlotte Street, which later became the scene of his gruesome crimes. Berdella worked as a chef and eventually opened an antiques and oddities shop named Bob's Bazaar Bizarre.Crimes
Between 1984 and 1987, Berdella lured young men to his home, where he subjected them to prolonged periods of captivity involving sexual assault, torture, and ultimately murder. He kept detailed logs and photographs documenting the abuse inflicted upon his victims. The following is a list of his known victims:- Jerry Howell (19 years old) – July 5, 1984: An acquaintance of Berdella, Howell was drugged, sexually assaulted, and tortured for approximately 28 hours before dying from asphyxiation. Berdella dismembered his body and disposed of the remains in garbage bags.
- Robert Sheldon (20 years old) – April 12, 1985: A former lodger, Sheldon was held captive for three days, enduring various forms of torture, including the application of drain cleaner to his eyes and the insertion of needles under his fingernails. He was killed by suffocation on April 15, 1985. Berdella initially buried Sheldon's head in his backyard before later retrieving it and storing the skull in his closet.
- Mark Wallace (27 years old) – June 22, 1985: Discovered seeking shelter from a storm in Berdella's tool shed, Wallace was offered refuge inside the house. He was subjected to torture, including the application of electrical shocks, and died after approximately 20 hours of captivity on June 23, 1985.
- James Ferris (25 years old) – September 26, 1985: Ferris was held captive for approximately 27 hours, during which he was subjected to continuous torture, including electrical shocks and acupuncture via hypodermic needles. He died from the injuries inflicted upon him.
- Todd Stoops (23 years old) – June 17, 1986: An acquaintance who had previously stayed with Berdella, Stoops was held captive for two weeks. He endured escalating torture, including electrical shocks to his eyes in an attempt to blind him and the injection of drain cleaner into his larynx to silence his screams. Stoops died from a combination of blood loss and infection on July 1, 1986.
- Larry Wayne Pearson (20 years old) – June 23, 1987: After forming a casual friendship with Berdella, Pearson was held captive for six weeks. He was subjected to severe torture, including the breaking of bones in his hands to render them unusable. Pearson was killed by suffocation on August 5, 1987.
