Jerry Howell, a 19-year-old man described in reporting as white, disappeared in Kansas City, Missouri after accepting what sounded like a simple favor from a familiar face: Robert Berdella, a local shopkeeper and flea-market regular who had known Howell and his family for years. Berdella told Howell he would drive him to a dancing contest in Merriam, Kansas, and Howell climbed into the car believing he was headed for a normal night out.
