In the summer of 2017, a weekend that should have been filled with Fourth of July celebrations turned tragic in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 49-year-old Andre L. Barnes. On July 1, Barnes, along with two other men from Tulsa, Oklahoma, 31-year-old John W. Waldon and 46-year-old Darren L. Harris, were found dead in what would become a grim and complex homicide investigation.
The weekend was marked by a spate of violence, with a total of seven fatalities and 15 separate shooting incidents reported in the city.
The discovery of the three men unfolded in two connected scenes. Harris's body was first found inside a car. Shortly thereafter, the bodies of Barnes and Waldon were located on a nearby street. Investigators determined that the men from Tulsa were in Kansas City to collect a significant debt. According to court documents, Harris had traveled to the city to get money from Tyree West, who allegedly owed him between $10,000 and $20,000 from a previous drug transaction involving PCP.
For nearly three years, the case remained without arrests, a source of ongoing pain for the families of the victims. However, in April 2020, a significant breakthrough occurred when Jackson County prosecutors announced charges against four Kansas City men in connection with the triple homicide. Rashidi Crosdale, then 36, and Tyree West, 41, were each charged with three counts of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Two other men, 31-year-old Terrence Harden and 19-year-old Ravon Freeman, faced two counts each of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
At the time the charges were filed, Crosdale and West were already incarcerated in federal prison on unrelated charges. Harden and Freeman were subsequently arrested. The indictment brought a measure of hope for justice for the families of Andre Barnes, John Waldon, and Darren Harris, shedding light on the violent circumstances that led to their deaths during that bloody holiday weekend.
