In the pre-dawn hours of December 21, 2025, law enforcement officers in Kansas City, Missouri, were dispatched to the intersection of Admiral Boulevard and The Paseo following reports of a shooting. Arriving just before 4:30 a.m., first responders discovered a victim lying unresponsive in the street. The individual, later identified as 33-year-old Johntrel L. Vickers, a male, had sustained apparent gunshot trauma to the face.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene, marking another violent episode in the city's ongoing struggle with homicides.
Detectives immediately commenced an investigation, scouring the area for witnesses and evidence. Surveillance footage obtained from the vicinity played a crucial role in reconstructing the events leading to the death. The video captured Vickers walking along the street when a dark blue Chevrolet Equinox pulled into a nearby parking lot. A suspect, described as wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with distinctive yellow writing, was seen exiting the vehicle and approaching the victim. Following a brief interaction, the assailant produced a firearm and shot Vickers before fleeing the scene in the SUV.
The investigation quickly linked the shooting to a series of violent crimes plaguing the area that month. Authorities connected the vehicle and forensic evidence—specifically ballistics and DNA recovered from a separate shooting scene earlier in December—to a suspect identified as Kur B. Bak. On December 22, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office announced that Bak, a 28-year-old resident of Blue Springs, had been charged with multiple felonies. These charges included two counts of first-degree murder, one of which was for the killing of Vickers, as well as several counts of armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.
