In the early morning hours of August 10, 2014, a violent tragedy unfolded in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 20-year-old Black male Stephon L. Cunningham. The incident occurred just after 2:00 a.m. near the intersection of Southwest Boulevard and Broadway, a typically vibrant area of the city. Cunningham was traveling northbound on Broadway in a vehicle accompanied by two other individuals when the group was suddenly ambushed in what authorities described as a coordinated attack.
According to police reports, two unknown vehicles approached Cunningham's car, flanking it on both the driver's and passenger's sides. Gunmen from within the pursuing vehicles opened fire, unleashing a barrage of bullets into the victim's car. The triple shooting left the vehicle riddled with evidence of the assault and resulted in injuries to all three occupants. Emergency responders rushed the victims to a nearby hospital, where Cunningham was taken into surgery. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that morning.
