William Darrell Lindsey, born William Armstrong Jr. on March 18, 1935, in Palatka, Florida, faced tragedy early in life. Subsequently, he was adopted by Cecil and Olean Lindsey, a couple from St. Augustine who had recently lost their infant son. Lindsey's adoptive mother was reportedly abusive, subjecting him to physical and emotional mistreatment. During his childhood, Lindsey exhibited troubling behaviors, including torturing animals and setting fires. Academically, he struggled, being held back multiple times and described as a C-grade student with low intelligence. He was often bullied and had difficulty forming friendships.Criminal Activities
Lindsey's criminal behavior escalated over time. He developed a reputation for violence and was known by nicknames such as "Crazy Bill" and "Red Bird." His crimes primarily targeted vulnerable women, including sex workers, in Florida and North Carolina between 1983 and 1996. - Lisa Foley (24): Last seen on October 9, 1983, at the Tradewinds Lounge in St. Augustine, Florida. Her body was found five days later in a marshy area on West Pope Road near St. Augustine Beach. Cause of death: strangulation.
- Anita McQuaig Stevens (27): Murdered on November 29, 1988, on Fish Island Road, St. Augustine, Florida. Cause of death: bludgeoning with a wooden plank.
- Constance Marie "Connie" Terrell (26): Killed on June 10, 1989, on Holmes Boulevard, St. Augustine, Florida. Cause of death: gunshot wound to the head with a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle.
- Lashawna Streeter (27): Murdered on March 1, 1992, on Four Mile Road, St. Augustine, Florida. Cause of death: beating.
- Donetha Snead-Haile (32): Went missing in April 1993; her body was never recovered. Lindsey claimed to have killed her on April 4, 1993, in St. Augustine, Florida. Cause of death: unknown.
- Cheryl Denise "Niecey" Lucas (32): Killed in mid-June 1995 on Palmer Street, St. Augustine, Florida. Cause of death: bludgeoning with a metal nail bar.
- Diana Richardson (48): Murdered on October 12, 1995, on Holmes Boulevard, St. Augustine, Florida. Cause of death: beating.
- Lucy Arnett Raymer (32): Killed on December 25, 1996, on Chunns Cove Road, Asheville, North Carolina. Cause of death: blows to the head.
