William Darrell Lindsey: The St. Augustine Serial Killer

Overview

William Darrell Lindsey was an American serial killer whose known crimes stretched from 1983 through 1996. Most of his victims were women living in or around St. Augustine, Florida, although his final confirmed murder occurred in Asheville, North Carolina. Lindsey targeted women whose disappearances he believed might receive limited attention, including women involved in prostitution or struggling with drug addiction. He used several methods of killing, including strangulation, severe beatings, bludgeoning and shooting. Lindsey was convicted of six murders in Florida and confessed to additional killings. Eight victims have been publicly connected to him with substantial certainty. He claimed responsibility for still more murders in Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, but investigators could not verify every confession. Some estimates attributed as many as twelve to twenty killings to him, although those higher figures remain unconfirmed.

Early Life and Violent Behavior

William Darrell Lindsey was born William Darrell Armstrong in Palatka, Florida, on May 18, 1935. His childhood was marked by instability and loss. His biological parents died in an automobile accident, after which he was adopted and raised under the Lindsey surname. Accounts of his early years described him as socially isolated and prone to troubling behavior. As an adult, Lindsey worked a series of jobs and maintained relationships that concealed the violence he was capable of committing. He married, fathered several children and lived for years in northeastern Florida. People who knew him sometimes described him as unpredictable and quick to anger.
