Cheryl Denise "Niecey" Lucas, a 32-year-old African American woman, was tragically murdered in mid-June 1995 in St. Augustine, Florida. Her body was discovered on Palmer Street, having suffered fatal blunt force trauma inflicted with a metal nail bar. At the time of her death, Cheryl Denise Lucas was one of several women in the area who had fallen victim to a series of violent killings targeting sex workers.
The investigation into these murders eventually led to the arrest of William Darrell "Bill" Lindsey, a 61-year-old white male, in April 1997. Lindsey was apprehended in Asheville, North Carolina, following the murder of Lucy Arnett Raymer, a 32-year-old woman who was beaten to death. A taxi driver had witnessed Raymer entering Lindsey's trailer, which led to his arrest. Upon interrogation, Lindsey confessed to multiple murders, including that of Cheryl Denise Lucas. In May 1999, he pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree murder, including the murder of Cheryl Denise Lucas, and was subsequently sentenced to 30 years in prison. Lindsey died of cancer in 2001 while serving his sentence at the Marion Correctional Institute in Ocala, Florida.
Cheryl Denise Lucas was laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Augustine, Florida. Her untimely death, along with those of other women in the area, highlighted the dangers faced by marginalized individuals and the importance of thorough investigations to bring perpetrators to justice.
