Lucy Arnett Raymer, a 32-year-old woman, was found deceased on December 26, 1996, in Asheville, North Carolina. Authorities later connected her death to William Darrell Lindsey, a suspected serial killer who had confessed to multiple murders, primarily targeting women with a history of prostitution arrests. Lindsey, who had been living in Oteen, North Carolina, since March 1996, was arrested in December of that year and held in Buncombe County Jail.
Investigators suspected Lindsey’s involvement in numerous killings across multiple states, including Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Sheriff Bobby Medford of Buncombe County stated that Lindsey would first be tried in Asheville for Raymer’s murder. Lindsey ultimately pleaded guilty to six murders and was sentenced to 30 years in prison in Florida. He died in prison on April 17, 2001.
