Jayme Denise Hurley, a 39-year-old white individual from Asheville, North Carolina, was reported missing on May 24, 1990. Hurley had previously worked as a counselor and teacher at the Juvenile Evaluation Center in Swannanoa and was known for her dedication to helping troubled youth. She had maintained a platonic relationship with one of her former students, Lesley Eugene Warren, who had a history of criminal behavior and psychological instability.
Hurley invited Warren to her home shortly before her disappearance, believing he needed help.
Authorities began investigating Hurley's disappearance immediately, and suspicion quickly fell on Warren. He was arrested four days later for unrelated charges, including failure to produce a vehicle title and misdemeanor larceny involving Hurley's purse, which was found in his van. Despite being released on bond, Warren remained a person of interest. He initially claimed Hurley had died of a cocaine overdose and that he had disposed of her body in the French Broad River. However, this account was inconsistent with what friends and family knew of Hurley, who was not known to use drugs.
On July 18, 1990, the body of 39-year-old white individual Jayme Hurley was discovered in a remote, snake-infested area of the Pisgah National Forest, buried in a shallow grave. Her clothes were found nearby, and the body was concealed with rocks and debris. Following this discovery, Warren confessed to the murder and was charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. He admitted to strangling Hurley late at night after she had allowed him to stay at her home.
Warren, then 22 years old, was later identified as a serial killer responsible for the deaths of multiple women across several states. In addition to Hurley, he confessed to the murders of Velma Faye Gray, a 42-year-old white woman from South Carolina, and Patsy Diane Vineyard, a 20-year-old white woman from New York. He also led authorities to the body of Katherine Noelle Johnson, a 21-year-old white woman from High Point, North Carolina, whose body was found in the trunk of her car in a parking deck.
Warren was arrested without resistance at a residence in High Point and was subsequently charged with multiple counts of murder and kidnapping. He was described by law enforcement as a sociopath capable of killing without remorse. In 1995, Warren pled guilty to the first-degree murder of Jayme Hurley and was sentenced to death. He also received a life sentence for the murder of Velma Gray. Authorities believe Warren may be connected to additional unsolved cases along the East Coast.
