Glennon Edward Engleman (February 6, 1927 – March 3, 1999) was an American dentist and serial killer. Over the course of 30 years, he planned and executed multiple murders for monetary gain. Engleman, a sociopath, enjoyed planning and carrying out killings, often involving his ex-wives, lovers, and dental assistant in his schemes.
Early Life
Engleman was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in dentistry in 1954. He served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and later used the GI Bill to fund his education.
Crimes
Engleman's criminal activities spanned from 1958 to 1980, during which he committed at least seven murders. His methods included shooting, bludgeoning with a sledgehammer, and using explosives. Below are the details of his known victims:
- James Bullock - Shot in 1958 near the St. Louis Art Museum. Bullock was married to Engleman's ex-wife, Edna Ruth Ball, who collected her husband's life insurance and invested $20,000 in Engleman's drag strip.
- Eric Frey - Killed on September 26, 1963. Frey was hit over the head with a rock and thrown into a well with dynamite. His widow gave Engleman $16,000 of the $25,000 insurance settlement.
- Sophia Marie Barrera - Killed in the 1970s. Barrera owned a dental laboratory and was owed money by Engleman.
- Other Victims - Engleman is linked to several other murders in the 1970s, all for the purpose of collecting insurance money or inheritance.
