James Carlin Toliver: Suspected California Serial Killer

Background

James Carlin Toliver was a cannery worker and forklift operator from Ceres, California, who became the central suspect in the disappearances of four women and the shooting death of a fifth. The suspected crimes occurred in and around Modesto between 1974 and 1980. Toliver was never arrested or tried because he died while apparently fleeing from the scene of his final suspected murder. Although only one killing was directly connected to Toliver through physical evidence, authorities identified striking similarities among the other cases. The missing women had access to substantial amounts of cash shortly before they vanished. Several had withdrawn money, sold property, or packed belongings as though they were preparing to relocate. The pattern surrounding the women later linked to Toliver was troubling. Each disappeared without maintaining contact with relatives, collecting personal property, or completing plans she had supposedly made. Large amounts of money were missing or believed to have been in the woman's possession. The final case, involving Florence Evelyn Richina, provided investigators with a grim explanation for how the earlier disappearances may have occurred. ...
