Mary Horton Vail was Felix Vail's first wife. They married in 1961 and had a son together in 1962. On October 28, 1962, Felix reported that Mary had drowned during a nighttime fishing trip on the Calcasieu River in Louisiana. He claimed she fell overboard when he swerved the boat to avoid a stump and that he was unable to save her. Her body was discovered two days later.
