Danny Lee Barber: The Dallas County Serial Killer
Overview
Danny Lee Barber was an American serial killer and burglar responsible for four murders in Dallas County, Texas, between 1978 and 1980. Born on May 8, 1955, Barber was only in his early twenties when his known series of killings began. His crimes involved burglary, robbery, extreme physical violence and, in at least one case, sexual assault. After his eventual arrest, Barber confessed to a succession of killings that had previously appeared to be separate crimes. He was convicted of capital murder for killing Janice Louise Ingram and received life sentences for the other murders. Nearly two decades after his death sentence was imposed, Barber was executed by the State of Texas on February 11, 1999.
The Beginning of the Murders
The earliest known murder attributed to Barber occurred on June 18, 1978, in Dallas County. The victim was Raymond Curly, whose name is sometimes reported as Raymond Curley. Compared with Barber's later victims, relatively few publicly available details have survived concerning the circumstances of Curly's death. What became important to investigators was Barber's later admission that he was responsible. The killing established the beginning of a series that would continue for almost two years.
At the time, there was no obvious public connection between Curly's death and the violence that would follow. Barber was not apprehended for the killing, allowing him to remain free as additional victims were murdered in the Dallas area.
