On January 17, 1979, the lifeless body of 48-year-old Mercedes Mendez, a Hispanic woman, was discovered in a wooded area near Mesquite, Texas. The victim had been subjected to a brutal assault, including physical beating and sexual molestation, before being shot three times in the head. The severity and nature of the crime shocked the local community and left investigators searching for leads.
For over a year, the case remained unsolved, with no significant progress in identifying the perpetrator. However, in May 1980, a breakthrough occurred when Danny Lee Barber, a 25-year-old man from Los Angeles, was arrested for breaking into a flea market. While incarcerated, Barber confessed to multiple murders, including that of Mercedes Mendez. He detailed his involvement in her death, admitting to the heinous acts committed against the 48-year-old Hispanic woman.
Barber's confession also encompassed other victims: 39-year-old Mary Caperton, murdered on April 21, 1980; Raymond Curly, killed on June 18, 1978; and 50-year-old Janice Ingram, slain on October 8, 1979. In August 1980, Barber was sentenced to death for the murder of Janice Ingram and received life imprisonment for the other three murders, including that of Mercedes Mendez. After spending nearly two decades on death row, Barber was executed by lethal injection on February 11, 1999, at the Huntsville Unit in Texas.
The resolution of Mercedes Mendez's case brought a measure of closure to her family and the community, highlighting the relentless efforts of law enforcement to bring justice to victims of such violent crimes.
