Phillip Carl Jablonski: A Detailed Overview
Phillip Carl Jablonski (January 3, 1946 – December 27, 2019) was an American serial killer and rapist responsible for five known murders between 1978 and 1991 across California and Utah. His crimes were marked by extreme violence, sexual assault, and post-mortem mutilation. He was apprehended on April 28, 1991, convicted, and sentenced to death in California.
Background and Prior Conviction (1978)
Jablonski’s violence toward women preceded his later spree. In July 1978, he murdered 29-year-old Linda Raye “Linda” Kimball after a period of escalating abuse. He served approximately 12 years in prison and was paroled in 1990, despite documented concerns about his mental health and non-compliance with medication while under Veterans Affairs care.
The 1991 Interstate Spree
Within a single week in April 1991, Jablonski murdered three women in California and one in Utah, and attempted to abduct another victim in Wyoming while in flight. The sequence below reflects dates and locations established in court records and contemporary reporting.
- Fathyma Vann (38) — April 22, 1991 — near Indio, California. A classmate of Jablonski at College of the Desert, she was found in the Indio desert, shot in the head and sexually assaulted; her body exhibited mutilation, including the phrase “I Love Jesus” carved into her back.
- Carol Spadoni (46) — April 23, 1991 — Burlingame, California. Jablonski’s wife, met and married while he was incarcerated in the 1980s; she was shot, suffocated with duct tape, and stabbed in the home she shared with her mother.
- Eva Petersen (72) — April 23, 1991 — Burlingame, California. Spadoni’s mother; Petersen was shot and sexually assaulted the same day in the same residence.
- Margie (Margie Marie Stocks) Rogers (58) — April 27, 1991 — Thompson Springs, Grand County, Utah. Jablonski robbed the Rogers Roost convenience store on I-70 and fatally shot Rogers; charging documents and local reporting note a .22-caliber handgun and cash missing from the register.
Attempted Abduction During Flight
On April 25, 1991, while fleeing west-to-east, Jablonski accosted a woman at a Wyoming rest stop (Uinta County). She escaped when he dropped his gun; an officer questioned him but let him go after accepting his claim the gun had fallen accidentally.
