Fathyma Vann, a 38-year-old woman from Indio, California, was tragically murdered on April 22, 1991. She was a recently widowed mother of two teenage daughters and was attending a local community college at the time of her death. Her life was cut short by Phillip Carl Jablonski, a convicted serial killer who had previously served time for murder. Vann was found in a shallow ditch in the Indio desert, having suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
Her body had been subjected to severe mutilation, including the removal of her eyes and ears, and the words 'I Love Jesus' were carved into her back. She had also been sexually assaulted.
Jablonski, who was attending the same community college as Vann as part of his parole conditions, was immediately suspected by Vann's daughter, Yolonda Robinson-Vann. She had met Jablonski through her mother and had an unsettling premonition about him. When Vann failed to return home one evening, her daughter instinctively knew something was wrong. The next morning, authorities confirmed her worst fears—her mother had been found dead. Jablonski was later convicted of her murder, along with the killings of Margie Rogers, Carol Spadoni, and Spadoni's mother, Eva Petersen. His crimes spanned multiple states, and he was ultimately sentenced to death in California in 1994.
Jablonski's criminal history was extensive. He had previously murdered his first wife, Melinda Kimball, in 1978. Despite this, he was able to place a personal ad while in prison, which led to his marriage to Carol Spadoni in 1982. Tragically, she and her mother became two of his later victims. On April 23, 1991, just one day after Vann's murder, Jablonski killed Spadoni and Petersen in their Burlingame, California home. Spadoni was shot, suffocated with duct tape, and stabbed, while Petersen was sexually assaulted and shot. Jablonski continued his killing spree, murdering Margie Rogers in Utah on April 27, 1991, during a truck-stop robbery. He was arrested the following day in Kansas.
Jablonski's trial and sentencing were marked by disturbing evidence, including an audio recording in which he described his crimes in explicit detail. In January 2006, the California Supreme Court upheld his death sentence. He remained on death row until his death in December 2019 at the age of 73 in San Quentin State Prison. Vann's daughter, Yolonda, has since spoken out about the failures of the legal system in handling her mother's case and the trauma inflicted upon victims' families. She continues to advocate for better treatment of those affected by violent crimes.
