Police Officer Raymond Mathis, aged 36, served with the Montgomery Police Department in Alabama. He lost his life in the line of duty on April 30, 1936. On that day, Officer Mathis and a fellow officer were dispatched to 820 High Street to question a man who had recently been released from the chain gang. Upon their arrival on motorcycles, the man quickly stood up from the front porch and entered the house. While the other officer went to the back door, Officer Mathis remained at the front.
