The incident occurred at the Royal Plaza Inn in Indio, where she was fatally shot during a drug-fueled night. The events leading to her death began when Aaron Drayer, a 22-year-old man from Denver, Colorado, became agitated with Yanez while they were using drugs with several others in a hotel room.
