Jorge Avila-Torrez: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Early Life and Background

Jorge Avila-Torrez was born on August 18, 1988, in Zion, Illinois. He grew up in a neighborhood where he would later commit heinous crimes that shocked the community and the nation.

The Murders of Laura Hobbs and Krystal Tobias

On May 8, 2005, Mother's Day, eight-year-old Laura Hobbs and nine-year-old Krystal Tobias went out to play on their bicycles in Zion, Illinois. When they failed to return home by nightfall, their families, along with police and volunteers, initiated an extensive search. Tragically, the following morning, Laura's father, Jerry Hobbs, discovered the bodies of the two girls in Beulah Park Nature Area. Both had been brutally stabbed multiple times in their necks and faces, and evidence later revealed they had been sexually assaulted. Authorities quickly focused on Jerry Hobbs due to his criminal history. After a prolonged interrogation, he confessed to the murders, a confession that was later proven false. Hobbs spent five years in jail awaiting trial. In 2008, DNA evidence from the crime scene did not match Hobbs, casting doubt on his involvement. It wasn't until years later that the true perpetrator, Jorge Avila-Torrez, was identified through DNA matches from subsequent crimes.

The Murder of Amanda Snell

After the 2005 murders, Avila-Torrez enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. On July 11, 2009, while stationed at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia, he murdered 20-year-old Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Amanda Jean Snell. Avila-Torrez entered Snell's room, bound her wrists with a laptop power cord, and strangled her. He then concealed her body in a wall locker, where it was discovered two days later when she failed to report for duty. ...Read More
