The Lewis-Clark Valley Killer

Overview of the Unsolved Crimes

The Lewis-Clark Valley Killer is the name commonly given to an unidentified person believed to have been responsible for a series of disappearances and murders in and around Lewiston, Idaho, Clarkston, Washington, and neighboring communities. The principal cases occurred between April 1979 and September 1982. Investigators have connected or compared at least five victims, although no individual has ever been convicted of the crimes and some aspects of the proposed connection remain disputed. The suspected killer operated in a region divided by the Idaho-Washington state line and crossed by the Snake and Clearwater rivers. The cases involved victims who disappeared while participating in ordinary activities: a child returning from a community fair, a college student traveling by bicycle, two young women walking to a grocery store, and a theater employee practicing music and doing laundry. The absence of clear witnesses, the movement of victims across jurisdictions, and the passage of time complicated the investigations.

Christina Lee White

Twelve-year-old Christina Lee White disappeared from Asotin, Washington, on April 28, 1979. She had attended events connected with the Asotin County Fair and was later at a friend's residence. During the afternoon, Christina telephoned her mother and said that she felt sick from the heat. Her mother advised her to rest and return home when she felt better. Accounts of Christina's final known movements have varied. She was reportedly seen later that day in the 500 block of Second Street, possibly riding the new white ten-speed bicycle she had received for her birthday. Christina never arrived home. Her bicycle also disappeared and has never been recovered. Weeks later, pieces of her schoolwork were reportedly discovered in a field outside Asotin, but the discovery did not lead investigators to her. Christina's remains have never been found, and an exact date of death has not been established. April 28, 1979, is her disappearance date and the date on which investigators believe she may have encountered foul play. Authorities have stated that she did not appear to have voluntarily run away. ...
