On a summer day in 1981, Kristin Noel David, a 22-year-old Caucasian female, embarked on a bicycle ride that would be her last. A senior at the University of Idaho with a bright future, studying for a double major in broadcast journalism and political science, she set out from her Moscow, Idaho, apartment on June 26th. Her destination was Lewiston, a challenging ride southward on Highway 95, where she planned to visit with friends and former professors.
As Kristin pedaled along the
highway, several witnesses later reported seeing a woman matching her description being approached by a man in a brown van near the town of Genesee. The same man and his van were reportedly seen interacting with other female cyclists and pedestrians along the same route that day. Kristin, however, never reached her destination. Eight days later, on the 4th of July, a horrifying discovery was made. Her dismembered remains were found in black plastic bags floating in the Snake River, about six miles west of Clarkston, Washington. Some of her remains had been wrapped in pages from April 1981 editions of a local newspaper. Her blue 10-speed bicycle, clothing, and other personal items were never recovered.
The investigation into Kristin's murder has spanned decades, yet no arrests have been made. The primary suspect was described by witnesses as a white male, approximately 30 years old at the time, around 5'10" tall with a stocky or husky build and a beard that may have been brown or reddish. He was seen driving a well-kept brown van with yellow license plates. Authorities have explored various leads over the years, including the possibility that her death is connected to a series of other unsolved murders and disappearances in the Lewis-Clark Valley between 1979 and 1982. At one point, serial killer Ottis Toole implicated himself in the crime, but investigators ultimately dismissed him as a viable suspect due to inconsistencies in his confessions. Another person of interest was an employee of the Lewiston Civic Theater who had connections to other victims in the area, but no charges were ever filed.
Despite the passage of time, law enforcement, including the FBI, considers Kristin's case to be active and ongoing. Advances in technology have allowed for the retesting of evidence found with her remains. Investigators remain hopeful that someone in the community may still hold the key piece of information that will finally bring justice for Kristin Noel David. They continue to urge the public to come forward with any details, no matter how insignificant they may seem.
