Larry D. Hubbard was born on September 2, 1952, in the United States Virgin Islands. He also went by the aliases Larry David Barnes and Larry Lamar Ratliff. Prior to his involvement in the murders, Hubbard had a criminal record that included a 1974 robbery conviction in Florida. In 1977, he escaped from a Florida prison and remained at large for several decades.

Details of the Crimes

In 1980, Hubbard committed two murders in Los Angeles:

• Sonia Smith - On August 19, 1980, Sonia Smith, aged 25, was found strangled in Los Angeles. The circumstances surrounding her death remained a mystery for years until forensic evidence linked Hubbard to the crime.
• Phyllis McClinton - On November 14, 1980, another 25-year-old woman, Phyllis McClinton, was discovered strangled in Los Angeles. Similarities in the modus operandi suggested a connection to the earlier murder of Sonia Smith.

Two decades later, in 2000, Hubbard resurfaced with two additional murders:

• Vanessa Williams - On August 11, 2000, Vanessa Williams, aged 45, was found strangled in Pomona, California. The method of killing bore striking resemblance to the earlier murders.
• Christine Fields - On October 14, 2000, Christine Fields, aged 27, was discovered strangled in Riverside County, California. This murder further solidified the pattern observed in Hubbard's crimes.
